When Rodin had parts of his compositions cast as independent sculptures, their relationship to the larger work was often not readily apparent. For this bust of Eustache de Saint-Pierre, however, the rope around his neck remained, maintaining the old man’s identity as a burgher.
The model for this head was the artist Jean-Charles Cazin, a friend of Rodin’s who was a native of the Calais region and allegedly a descendant of Eustache de Saint-Pierre.
