Is the small lump on the handle of this stoneware an imperfection, or does it have a purpose?

The form of this ceramic ewer is copied from a metal prototype, which includes a hinged lid. This bump would be where the hinge was attached to the body of the piece, but as the ceramic bump is not pierced, it wasn’t actually used in this way.
